Battle Hymn is inspired by the true story of American minister Dean Hess, portrayed here with rare sensitivity by Rock Hudson. As a bomber pilot in World War II, Hess accidentally dropped a bomb destroying a German orphanage. Tormented by guilt, he moved to Korea after the war to offer his services as a missionary. Blending the best elements of Christianity and Eastern spiritual teachings, Hess established a large orphanage. His missionary efforts are jeopardized when the "police action" in Korea erupts in 1950. Hess must now navigate the tumultuous political landscape while continuing to nurture and protect the children under his care. So hard to work under devastating circumstances, inspiring by his courage.
