Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey) is a trooper from the state of Rhode Island with multiple personalities. He is usually gentle and avoids confrontation until someone or something pushes him a little too far. That's when his Maniacal Alter-Ego, Hank, takes over. Charlie is assigned a routine task to bring back a woman named Irene, who is accused of being Irene Waters (Renée Zellweger), to New York, but they will have to evade corrupt police officers. Their escape would be much simpler for everyone involved if Hank didn't keep popping up at the most inconvenient times, causing chaos and mayhem along the way.
